The new church was
undergoing a serious time of apostasy and heresy. The defense
against this false doctrine was to reinforce the teaching of the Word
of God. As Paul did in his final book of 2 Timothy, John made
it a point to express the urgent need to be studying and teaching the
Word of God.
When the U. S. Treasury hires new recruits and begins to train them to
recognize counterfeit currency, they do not show them thousands of
counterfeit
bills, they have their students give all of their time in studying the
true currency of the United States of America. Once they can recognize
the truth in a moments notice, it is very easy to spot the false.
In the same way, the way to recognize false doctrine is not
to study false doctrine, but instead immerse yourself in a serious
study of the Word of God. Whenever the false is presented it
will immediately be recognized for what it is.
