The Book of 1 Kings Commentary
David, the
"Man after
God's own Heart has died, Solomon his son takes the throne.
Solomon
begin his reign in one of the most spectaculat ways imaginable. The
Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and said to him: "Ask what shall I
give you".
Solomon said to the Lord "I am a
little child, I
do not know how to go
out or come in...Therefore give to your servant an understaning heart
to judge your people..."
Solomon's speech pleased the Lord and the Lord said to him:
1 Kings 3
"Because
you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself,
nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your
enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice,
behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a
wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like
you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. And I
have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so
that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days."
Although Solomon had an amazing beginning, he did not finish well.
Against the advice of the Lord Solomon incresed his wives, horses and
wealth and these things drew his heart away from the Lord.
1Kings 11:4
For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart
after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the LORD his God, as
was the heart of his father David.
After Solomon dies, the kingdom is divided and the people fall away
from the Lord. The lesson of Solomon's life is to keep the
Lord first in all things and to not love the things of the world which
always draw us away from the Lord.
